Megaton One:
One of Denmark’s largest Power-to-X projects
Megaton One is the name of one of Denmark's largest Power-to-X (PtX) projects, set to be established in the municipality of Ringkøbing-Skjern in Jutland. The Megaton One energy park will produce the green fuels of the future, including green methanol, which can replace bunker oil in container ships. The project is a collaboration between Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality and the Danish energy developer GreenGo Energy.
The Megaton One energy park will consist of a PtX electrolysis plant and several renewable energy facilities designed to supply green electricity to the electrolysis plant. The PtX facility will be located near the upcoming transformer station in the area. Production will rely on power generated by up to 1,000 hectares of solar panels—equivalent to about 1,400 soccer fields—and 30 wind turbines.
Why Ringkøbing-Skjern?
With an area of 1,489 square kilometers, Ringkøbing-Skjern is Denmark’s largest municipality by land area. In addition to its vast open spaces, the region is known for its strong westerly winds. Together, these factors create highly favorable conditions for an energy project like Megaton One, where space and optimal wind conditions are critical.
Historically, Ringkøbing-Skjern has supported both agriculture and production industries. This legacy carries a unique responsibility to help reduce Denmark’s carbon footprint. The municipality has embraced this role by leading the implementation of Power-to-X solutions. With Megaton One, Ringkøbing-Skjern moves closer to realizing its vision of integrating sustainability into all aspects of its development.
Local Contributions
While Megaton will have a positive impact on Denmark’s overall carbon footprint, it will also contribute significantly to local growth and employment. The project involves several local and Danish subcontractors specializing in areas such as CO2 capture, logistics, service, and industrial components, boosting employment across multiple sectors.
An analysis estimates that the construction phase will generate approximately 3,000 job-years, with nearly half of these jobs expected to be local. Once operational, Megaton will create about 150 direct and indirect jobs, around 100 of which will be based in the local area.
These roles will span a variety of functions, from skilled labor positions to technical roles and engineering jobs. With Denmark, including Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality, currently experiencing low unemployment rates, the Megaton project could attract new residents to the area, thereby increasing the municipal tax base in the long term.
