Report: Megaton will bring new jobs and newcomers to Ringkjøbing-Skjern

In the coming years, the green transition and the production of renewable energy and fossil-free fuels will create thousands of new local jobs in areas leading the transition. This is true during the construction phase of new projects and in the subsequent operation. This will also be the case with Megaton in Ringkjøbing-Skjern, according to a report from Erhvervslivets Tænketank, formerly Axcelfuture, made for GreenGo Energy.

To gain clarity on the extent of new jobs in connection with Megaton, Erhvervslivets Tænketank has analyzed the employment effect of Megaton for GreenGo Energy.

New local jobs

The report has analyzed the employment effect of Megaton. The main conclusion is that almost 3,000 FTEs will be needed for the construction of Megaton and the derived projects for the benefit of the local area and Ringkjøbing-Skjern, as half of the new jobs will be local. The production of the PtX plant itself and the wind turbines will be the main contributors to employment. This corresponds to 1,000 FTEs during the expected three-year construction phase.

After the construction phase, the project will also lead to new and permanent jobs in connection with the operation of Megaton. Specifically, it is estimated that around 150 jobs will be associated with the project - almost 100 of them local.

Green business development, newcomers and increased tax base

Ringkjøbing-Skjern has long been at the forefront when it comes to the green transition. With Megaton, it is also believed that a “green business cluster” can be built, as the project will make it more interesting for other companies to establish themselves in the municipality, which will lead to further growth and employment.

The new jobs associated with Megaton could be anything from skilled workers to technicians and engineers. The report indicates that around 20 percent of the new permanent jobs will be filled by people with higher education. As a result, people will be moving to Ringkjøbing-Skjern - including highly educated people. This is due to low unemployment both in Denmark in general and in the municipality.

In-migration means an increased tax base, which can also help to ensure development in Ringkjøbing-Skjern.
